A recent study suggests that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments should be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural support.
